The A2Z Astronomy class meets the second Sunday of each month at 7:00 pm in the West Wing of the 1873 Herget Building.

Discussions cover contemporary Astronomical topics as well as those historic. There is no prerequisite knowledge of Math or Astronomy is necessary. The group meets for about an hour or so and is free to any member of the Observatory.

Put the entire universe on your computer.

There are several great, free sky simulation programs that can help you reach for the stars, and keep up with what's up in the sky. This class will cover installation and use of free downloadable planetarium type programs as well as a live tutorial on how to get the most out of them. Then we will cover the best astronomy apps for your mobile devices.

Please bring your laptops and/or mobile devices to class (others will be provided if you don't have them). Viewing of the real sky through the historic telescopes will follow (weather permitting).

  Saturn!
Saturn is perhaps the prettiest of all the planets with its rings and moons. A guaranteed wow view!

We will discuss how our understanding of Saturn and its moons has changed from the days of Galileo to the Voyager and Cassini spacecraft missions. Learn about the disappearing rings phenomenon and Galileo’s puzzlement. Learn about the recently discovered ice geysers on Saturn’s moon Enceladus and the possibility of liquid water.
If weather permits, you will see this beautiful planet through the observatory telescope.

Museums & Historic Sites of Greater Cincinnati invites residents and visitors to explore the many historic and cultural gems of the Greater Cincinnati region at Museum Day on Fountain Square, Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Come and learn about attractions from across the tri-state in one, convenient downtown Cincinnati location. More than two dozen museums and historic sites will be on hand.
Museum Day participants will have several hands-on opportunities including looking at genealogy files and maps from the Delhi Historical Society, sun-gazing with the Cincinnati Observatory, or participating in a Junior Ranger Activity with the William Howard Taft National Historic Site.

  Beginner's Stargaze
Want some hands-on practice using a portable telescope?

Join us for an outdoor stargaze on the Observatory's grounds. You can bring your own telescope if you have one or "rent" one of ours for the evening!

A brief presentation will introduce you to the basics of how to use a telescope, and the best targets to look for in the sky that night. Simple star charts will be provided. The rest of the evening will be spent outside viewing (weather permitting). You're in charge of your own telescope - or bring a friend and share - but staff and volunteers will be available to help as needed!

Note: If you bring your own telescope, please know how to set it up - this night is mostly for viewing practice! If you need help learning to set up your telescope, please call the Observatory to arrange a one-on-one telescope help session.

Costs:

  Astronomy and the Nature of Science - Professional Development Workshop
In partnership with Xavier University, the Cincinnati Observatory is hosting two graduate-level courses this summer.

Both classes may be taken for 1-3 credit hours at a greatly-reduced rate or for non-credit.

All classes will be held at the Cincinnati Observatory and include use of the historic telescopes.

"Astronomy and the Nature of Science"

Course goals: At the completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Trace the history of astronomy and analyze how our understanding of the universe has changed
• Understand the cycles of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars
• Construct and use basic astronomical instruments

  Astronomy Thursday Public Program & Telescope Viewing
Astronomy Evenings typically include short astronomy presentations on a wide variety of topics; plenty of time for your questions on anything having to do with outer space; a short tour of this National Historic Landmark followed with stargazing through the historic 1843 telescope!
(Program held rain or shine, viewing is weather permitting).

For ages 8 to 80.

The topics and the night sky change week to week/month to month so you can visit often to hear and see something new. Reservations required.

Astronomy Thursdays admission is by suggested donation of $5 per person. Astronomy Fridays are $7 for adults, $5 for children under 18.

  SuperMoon!
At the Cincinnati Observatory
Saturday June 22, from 8-10pm.

Not all Full Moons are created equal. Some are closer to the Earth than others and every 14 months we get a super large Full Moon. These SuperMoons makes the Moon appear 14% bigger in the sky.

Join us at the Observatory to watch the SuperMoon rise above the eastern horizon at 8:20pm and see if you can tell the difference.

SuperMoon includes tours of the two Observatory buildings and viewing through the historic telescopes of Venus and Saturn (weather permitting).

  Historical Tours of the Cincinnati Observatory
Drop in anytime between 1 and 4pm to explore the fascinating story of the people who made Cincinnati the "Birthplace of American Astronomy".

Whether you're an astronomer, engineer or history buff, you'll find the Observatory has something for all.
We'll explore Cincinnati's past and how the citizens of Cincinnati founded the nation's first public astronomical observatory. Learn why John Quincy Adams was so interested in what was only happening here in Cincinnati? What discoveries were made?
Why the move to the current Mt. Lookout location? You'll be surprised to hear which famous Cincinnati architect designed the Observatory. Discover how 19th century astronomers determined time for Cincinnati and how the first U.S. weather predictions were achieved.

The tours can be customized to match your interests and time.
These hands-on tours are great for younger visitors too and are aligned with Ohio’s 3rd & 4th grade social studies standards.

  Sunday With The Stars!
Come out and spend “Sunday with the Stars” at the Cincinnati Observatory.

Every fourth Sunday night (starting time dependent upon season), Chuck Strubbe will open up one of the Cincinnati Observatory’s large, refracting telescopes for 2 hours. Chuck will be on hand to help you use the telescope, whether that means teaching you how to use it or finding objects in which you are interested.

No formal program is planned and you may come and go as you please. Questions are encouraged. Cloudy nights will be open to discussions of any and all astronomical subjects. .

Free for Observatory Members.
No Reservations Required. (Chuck reserves the right to leave after the 1st half hour if no one shows)

  Planetology: Unlocking the Secrets of the Solar System
Believe it or not, the current exploration of the solar system has little to do with astronomy. Find out how knowledge of the Earth itself and an understanding of its physical processes help us grasp the very nature of other terrestrial planets.

Terry Endres is president of the Cincinnati Astronomical Society (www.cinastro.org), faculty at Cincinnati State and an astronomy educator with the Cincinnati Observatory Center.
