  Late Night @ the Observatory
Can't sleep? Looking for a unique night out? Come see what the Observatory is like after hours - long after the "early crowd" has gone home. You'll get to use the oldest big telescope in the U.S. to view astronomical objects that are not visible until late at night (weather permitting). Get a sneak preview of the next season's planets and stars a month or two ahead of everyone else. Plus, zoom in on a late-rising moon, or watch the whole sky for a meteor shower or satellite passes. Each night is different and special!

These programs are recommended for adults only. If the weather does not permit viewing, we'll have fun with some of the crazy science experiments and "adult" constellation mythology stories that we can't share with family audiences.

Admission is $10 per person

  Measuring Midnight
If you want to be prepared to lead the countdown to midnight at your New Yea'’s party, you’d better make sure your clock is set accurately! Join us 48 hours before the big moment, and learn how to use the stars to measure midnight, down to the second!

Astronomers have always been the ultimate authorities on the measurement of time. Join us as we explore – and recreate! – the Cincinnati Observatory's key role in the history of timekeeping.

We'll tell the story of how the Observatory's meridian transit telescope was used to measure time by the motion of the stars, and how the Observatory's master clocks and time ball were used to maintain and communicate time for the rest of the city. Then, we'll try some timekeeping of our own, using telescopes and the bright stars of Orion to set our modern clocks. Bring a watch, and take your hand-measured Time home with you.

Admission is $10 per person.

  A2Z Astronomy Class
Deuterium or not Deuterium?

Or, more correctly, how much Deuterium? There isn’t very much of it around. But what is the question? That will be the topic of the upcoming A2Z Astronomy class on Sunday, January 13th. The question is central to the debate of whether or not the Big Bang actually happened. Why is there any Deuterium at all in the Universe and what the heck is it, anyway?

  Dance of the Planets
For thousands of years our ancestors believed that our Earth was the immovable center of the Universe.

The apparent motions of the five naked-eye "wandering stars" (planets) presented a great challenge to anyone attempting to explain their changing locations in the night sky. Not until the European Renaissance did we finally glimpse the true nature of the motions of the planets and realize for the first time Earth's place in the solar system. Travel with us through history to investigate the model of Ptolemy and how scientists who came more than a thousand years later deciphered nature's clues to the understanding of the complex motions of the planets. We will discuss ideas and observations of Copernicus, Tycho, Kepler and Galileo and how these great scientists solved the mystery of "The Dance of the Gods."

Weather permitting, telescope viewing with the 1845 telescope will be part of the evening's activities.

Starry-eyed lovers have been gazing upward in wonder for millennia. So, this year give your Valentine a true, out-of-this-world experience at the Cincinnati Observatory high atop Mt. Lookout.

On Valentine's night, the "Birthplace of American Astronomy" will offer music, drinks including Mt. Lookout Joe's amazing hot chocolate, sweets, flowers and viewing of the planets Venus, Jupiter and Mars through the historic telescopes (weather permitting)

Our Outreach Astronomer (and resident "James Bond of the Night Sky"), Dean Regas will give a presentation about red stars of passion in the winter sky and there will be tours of the buildings. This is your opportunity to “wish upon a star” and perhaps cuddle a bit beneath the Cincinnati Observatory's silvery domes.

Cost: $50 per couple. Reservations are required. Space is limited.

  Jupiter-King of the Planets
Jupiter looks like a very bright star when viewed with the naked eye; and through binoculars, it appears as a tiny disk. A large telescope, however, transforms it into magnificent swirling clouds of white, brown, blue and orange.

Dark belts, white oval storms, the great red spot, and occasionally the shadows of one of the four moons are a visual delight. Explore Jupiter through the eyes of Voyager I and II, discuss the nature of this great planet, and delve into the mysteries that remain. If weather permits, you may look through the observatory telescope to see for yourself what a beautiful planet it is.
